USER-GENERATED CONTENT

What can I post?

You can post almost anything as long as you abide by the spirit of our family-friendly Web site. You and your neighbors are interested in news the way you define it - photos, opinions, upcoming events, meeting announcements, helpful hints … whatever interests you. See the Terms of Service for specifics on what is prohibited.

How do I post a story or upload photos?

You must be registered for myheraldnews.com to post stories or upload photos.

Click the "Share Stories" button near the top of any page.

In the first drop-down box, select the town your story pertains to. For stories effecting more than one town, you can select Passaic, Morris or Bergen County.

Use the headline to create interest in your story. Below that is a large text box where you write your story.

Story writing tips:

Be sure to include the who, what, where, when, why and how. Include important specifics, including names (who), places and addresses (where), and dates and times (when).
• Make sure there is a sentence or paragraph that makes the point of the story clear.
• If you are describing an upcoming event, be sure to let readers know what they need to do to participate.
• Remember that your story needs to be complete, but that doesn't necessarily mean long. In fact, shorter is better.

If you want to include a photo, click the "Browse" button to upload a photo from your computer. Photos should be as big as your camera allowes, uncropped and unedited. Photos also must be in JPEG format.

Finally, you can add a caption to the photo. This is a short sentence explaining the photo. Be sure to provide the first and last names of the people in the photo and to identify them from left to right.(Example: John Jones, far left, is the mayor of Nirvana.) You also may want to include their ages and home towns.

If you want to save what you've entered and come back to it later, you can "Save as a Draft" by clicking on that option. You can access the story later from "My Stuff." When you're finished with a story, click "Post."

Story and photo postings show up immediately, and other users can comment on them.

How do I upload photos to a gallery?

Click on the "Post Your Photos" button near the top of any page.

In the first drop-down box, select the town your photo or photos pertain to. For stories effecting more than one town, you can select Passaic, Morris or Bergen County.

Use the headline to create interest in your photo(s).

In the next drop-down box, select the number of photos you will be uploading. The maximum is six photos per gallery, but you can upload as many galleries as you choose.

In the next field, which is a large text box, provide some basic information to introduce your photo gallery.

For each photo that you want to post, click "Browse" to upload the photo from your hard drive. Photos should be as large as your camera allows, uncropped and unedited. Photos also must be in JPEG format.

Enter a brief caption for the photo, with details on that particular photo. Remember to include the first and last names of the people in your picture. And, remember to identify them from left to right.(Example: John Jones, far right, is the mayor of Nirvana.)

Please do not violate copyright or other laws when you post photos. (See the "User Agreement" for specific posting guidelines.)

After photos are posted, other users can view and comment on them. Click on individual photos to get a larger view.

Once posted, photos can be edited or deleted at your discretion.

How do I find what I have posted?

To access stories and photos you have posted and comments you have made, click on "My Stuff" near the top-left of any page.

Can I make changes after posting a story, event or photo?

Yes. Go to "My Stuff," and click the "Modify" button next to the story, photo or comment. Make your changes and click on either "Save as Draft" or "Post." To delete your item, follow the same procedure, but select "Remove."

Can I show my friends and family what I've uploaded?

Yes. Click on your story, photo gallery or comment. At the top of the page on the right there are two links: "Print This," which prints a copy of what you uploaded, and "E-mail This," which lets you send a copy of what you have uploaded to as many people as you choose. Separate multiple e-mail addresses with a comma or semi-colon. You can also copy and send the Web address of the page you post.

How can I tell the difference between posts from myheraldnews.com staff and my neighbors?

It's easy to tell which stories and photos are from myheraldnews.com staff. Just look for the icon to the left of the story's byline. Staff photographers will be identifed in the photo caption.
